Canon Tissue is the pen name Karen Tsui adopted in 2005. The
origin of it was a mispronunciation of her last name from a local grocery store
cashier. “Thank you miss Tissue!” Karen loved it so much that she started to
refer herself as Tissue. Canon, on the other hand, was used as her first name
because it sounded like Karen.
Tissue was born and raised in Hong Kong. Comics and animations were always her strongest influences as a child. She started drawing at an early age by copying photos from magazines, teaching herself to see shapes and proportions. Spring 1991, she migrated to Sacramento, where she studied high school and college. Fall 1997, she studied graphic design at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. A year later, she decided to move to San Francisco and pursue her Fine Art degree at the Academy of Art University. Tissue has done freelances, commissions, art teaching, picture framing, and furniture decorative art. Her work was shown in galleries and private auctions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. She is happily married and also does vocals for Burmese.
Tissue’s most enjoyable subject matter is portraiture. Capturing the likeness and spirit of a person is her passion. Through caricatures, she is able to express her humor within portraiture. Tissue is fond of painting on wood panels, old furniture, and found objects. The majority of her works are mixed media. She is especially interested in time consuming projects, such as detail linoleum cuts and hand embroidery. Second caricature book in process.
